Tips for Benchtop Care

Good surface deserves looking after

Laminate still rank among the most popular benchtop surface in kitchens today. They are cost effective and easily changed when you want a different décor. Expensive hard benchtops don’t give you such diverse options. And they’re not necessarily heat or scratch resistant either.

Laminate benchtops need care. Like anything – looked after they will surface you well.

Handy tips

While laminate can withstand temperatures up to 155oC, care is needed with hot pots and pans – and these should not be placed directly on such surfaces.

Laminate surfaces are wear resistant, but sharp objects will scratch – spoiling the finish – particularly if the surface is dark.

Laminate surfaces are resistant to staining from normal common liquids and foodstuffs. But regular cleaning is important.

Cleaning

  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, scourers or strong mineral liquids.
  • Use recommended all-purpose soft cleaners or simply wash regularly with clean, warm soapy water. Rinse with clear water and wipe dry.
  • In the event of dried food – apply a recommended cleaner and soak. Use a nylon scrubbing brush if necessary. Wipe clean.
  • If dirt builds up – dilute one-part bleach with three-parts of water and leave for 10 minutes on surface. Scrub with nylon bristle brush and wipe clean.

Stains and marks

  • Newsprint - wipe with methylated spirits on a dry paper towel
  • Rust - try soaking in vinegar or lemon juice
  • Pencil - rub with wet rag
  • Marker - methylated spirits
  • Glues - acetone from pharmacy
  • Cooking oil - recommended cleaner or if the deposit is hard and sticky, use mineral turpentine on a rag.
